Antique textiles have an irresistible fascination for people, adding an heirloom touch to an interior, be it traditional or contemporary. However, as I discovered early in my design career, their rarity and limitations of supply are major stumbling blocks for designers wishing to include them in their projects. I proceeded to cultivate what would feel and appear like textiles with an “old soul” - something that would capture the essence of past civilizations and bygone eras through texture, colour and pattern. In the same way an old woman can be more profoundly beautiful than she was in her youth, I wished to recreate this mythical allure. As Avedon said “Youth never moves me. I seldom see anything very beautiful in a young face.”
Using playful acrobatics of style drawing from both the historical and the ethnic, I created a unique technique that has evolved into the SFB trademark.
